Storyteller Children's Center

Storeyteller Children's Center--Santa Barbara

Who We Are

Storyteller Children's Center provides quality, tuition-free early childhood education for homeless and at-risk children, as well as comprehensive support services for their families.

Who We Serve

Storyteller families are our community's most vulnerable. Many of our families are referred by Child Protective Services, Domestic Violence Solutions, CALM, Transition House and other social service agencies & professionals.

Most families live in shelters or substandard, exceptionally crowded conditions and have extremely low incomes.

More than half consist of single-parent households.

Children suffer from poverty, inadequate housing, domestic violence, parental substance abuse and other risk factors. Without intervention and therapy, experts know that early childhood traumas like these can have a tremendous impact on brain development.

Often due to these traumatic circumstances, many of our children have significant special needs such as behavior problems, delayed speech, and health issues.

History

From a grassroots beginning in 1988 as a half-day preschool center, Storyteller has grown into a full-time, comprehensive and cutting-edge program that helps 100 families each year and serves as a model for the community. We've had 25 incredible years of innovation, thanks to the support we receive from the community, for which we are infinitely grateful. We are excited about the next steps in our journey, and invite you to learn how you can be an integral part of our success and the success of our community for the next 25 years!

By providing quality, early childhood education and comprehensive support services, Storyteller Children’s Center helps homeless and at-risk families improve their lives.

Families are referred to Storyteller by various shelters and social service professionals. Some of our families live in shelters, while others live in substandard, exceptionally crowded conditions. All are considered by federal standards to have extremely low incomes ($20,000 or less annually for a family of four) and nearly 60% consist of single-parent households. Due to the difficulties these families face, exposure to medical, educational and other benefits is usually limited and child development is often delayed.
